Tony Elumelu will become the new Chairman of Seplat Energy starting January 2027. He will succeed Senator Udoma Udo Udoma in this key leadership role. This appointment marks a significant change for the energy company.
Engr. Effiong Okon will also assume the role of Chief Executive Officer from August 1, 2026. These leadership changes aim to guide Seplat Energy through its next phase of growth and transformation. The appointments were officially announced in a notice filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Tuesday.
This development impacts Ghana's broader economic outlook by signalling increased activity and investment in the West African energy sector. Ghana, heavily reliant on energy for its industrial and economic growth, watches such leadership changes closely. Increased stability or strategic direction in major regional energy players can influence gas supply, investment flows, and regional energy security. Companies like Seplat Energy, a major player in Nigeria's oil and gas sector, often have ripple effects across the sub-region's energy landscape.
The company board stated that Elumelu's vast experience in corporate governance will bring invaluable guidance. It also highlighted his focus on institution-building and long-term value creation. These qualities are crucial as Seplat aims to strengthen its position as a resilient and globally competitive energy institution. The official statement was signed by company secretary Edith Onwuchekwa.
What happens next involves monitoring Seplat's strategic direction under its new leadership, particularly its investment decisions. African energy markets and regulators will closely observe any shifts in exploration, production, or new energy initiatives. Investors will also be keen to see how these changes influence Seplat's stock performance and dividend policy. The appointments suggest a renewed emphasis on strategic expansion and operational efficiency within the company.
Mr. Elumelu is widely recognized as the Founder and Chairman of Heirs Holdings. This pan-African investment group holds diverse interests across critical sectors like energy, banking, and real estate. He is also the originator of Africapitalism, an economic philosophy. Africapitalism promotes long-term investments in Africa to unlock its economic potential. This philosophy aligns with Seplat's stated goals for growth and value creation.
Currently, Mr. Elumelu also chairs Nigeria's largest quoted conglomerate, Transcorp Group. Its subsidiaries include Transcorp Power, a leading electricity producer in West Africa. He also chairs the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group. His extensive background in leading major African enterprises offers significant oversight experience to Seplat Energy. Engr. Effiong Okon brings over 35 years of global industry expertise to his new CEO role. He previously served as Seplat's Operations Director and New Energy Director. Most recently, he led the ANOH Gas Processing Company, achieving first gas in January 2026.
