Minister Urges Responsible Mining for Regional Prosperity

Accra, Ghana – The 2026 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) commenced in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, 2026. Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, officially opened the event. He urged West African nations to embrace responsible mining and dependable power generation. This initiative aims to fuel industrial growth, create more jobs, and foster sustainable development throughout the sub-region.

The expo’s theme, “How Can Responsible Mining and Power Accelerate West Africa’s Sustainable Development?”, highlights a crucial focus. Minister Buah addressed attendees from across Africa and beyond. He noted the continually rising global demand for essential minerals. This trend positions West Africa favourably to attract international investment and advanced technology. The minister stated, “West Africa is home to a vast array of minerals, including gold, bauxite, iron ore, diamonds, manganese, and lithium. This convergence presents a historic opportunity for our region.” This suggests significant potential for economic benefit.

Ghana is implementing reforms to build a mining economy focused on value. Minister Buah stressed that success goes beyond just extracting minerals. He stated, “We are moving from a resource-rich economy to a value-driven mining economy in which success will be measured not only by what we extract, but by how mining supports industrialisation, creates jobs, expands local participation, and improves the lives of our citizens.” This marks a shift in policy towards broader economic benefits.

The Minister also addressed the serious threat of illegal mining. He called it one of the greatest dangers to the mining sector. Stronger enforcement measures, improved monitoring systems, and institutional reforms are underway. These actions aim to restore integrity to the industry. They will also protect the environment. Integrating mining and energy policies is vital. This integration supports responsible investment. It also promotes sustainable growth.

Regional cooperation is a key focus for Mr. Buah. He urged West African countries to unite. This collaboration will strengthen investor confidence. It will also make the sub-region more competitive globally. Global mineral supply chains are increasingly important. Seven countries are participating in WAMPEX 2026 for the first time. The three-day event runs until June 5, 2026. It provides a platform for leaders, investors, and policymakers. They will explore collaboration and investment opportunities.
