Ukraine has dismissed Iranian threats of retaliation after its forces targeted an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday. This incident marks the first direct link between the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Iran's threats are "unjustified and groundless." He accused the Tehran regime of being a direct accomplice to Russian aggression, supplying weapons that have killed Ukrainians since 2022. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces achieved "very good results" in long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including against vessels transporting military cargo linked to Iran.
This strike fits into Ukraine's broader strategy of disrupting Russia's war efforts and economic lifelines. Kyiv has long accused Tehran of complicity in drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Iran's ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, told state media that the vessel, named the "Anna," was anchored approximately 5km from the mouth of the Volga River when it was hit. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the incident as a "blatant UN Charter violation" and accused Ukraine of acting at Israel's behest to draw Europe into its war. He declared that the incident "CANNOT GO UNANSWERED." Sybiha, in turn, dismissed Araghchi's statements as "Iranian lies" and accused Iran of trying to divert attention from Russia's attacks on Ukrainian grain ships, which threaten global food security.
Ukraine has been actively targeting Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers to cut off a major source of revenue for the Kremlin. This, along with drone strikes on oil depots and online retail warehouses, forms part of what Zelensky calls Ukraine's "long-range sanctions campaign." However, some experts question the wisdom of Ukraine's decision to engage Iran directly. Ivan Stupak, a former intelligence official, told the BBC that while the main idea is to disrupt trading routes, it is not beneficial for Ukraine to open another battlefront with Iran. Olha Polishchuk from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (Acled) suggested the strike was less about opening a new front against Tehran and more about extending Kyiv's efforts to target networks supporting the Russian war effort. Targeting this route allows Kyiv to increase pressure on Russia's supply networks beyond traditional battlefields.
