Trade Ministry Secures €415,437 Grant for PharmaVax Programme

Ghana's Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has secured a significant grant of €415,437.78 for its PharmaVax Programme. This funding aims to strengthen the country's pharmaceutical industry. The programme seeks to position Ghana as a leading pharmaceutical manufacturing hub within West Africa.

This initiative will improve governance in the pharmaceutical sector. It will also enhance collaboration between government and industry players. The programme aims to attract foreign direct investment and promote transparency in investment and regulatory processes. This effort is crucial for Ghana's economic growth and public health.

This development aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to diversify its industrial base. The country seeks to reduce its reliance on imports, especially for essential goods like pharmaceuticals. Strengthening local manufacturing contributes to job creation and boosts export earnings. Ghana's commitment to industrialisation supports long-term economic stability and self-sufficiency.

Yaw Sakyi, Director of Administration at the Ministry, affirmed the government’s commitment. He represented the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, at a stakeholder meeting on June 25, 2026. Mr. Sakyi stated that the government’s pharmaceutical policy provides the necessary framework for industry growth. He also thanked the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for their support.

Godfred Gobah, Head of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Development Unit, outlined future plans. He confirmed the Ministry will work closely with the private sector. They will participate in local and international events to increase the visibility of Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry. This will create new market opportunities for local manufacturers. These efforts are expected to attract more investment and partnerships.

The PharmaVax programme expects to lay the groundwork for achieving key targets by 2030. These include doubling the value of Ghana’s pharmaceutical exports within the ECOWAS market. The programme also aims to increase the share of locally manufactured pharmaceutical products from 30 percent to 60 percent. This substantial increase would significantly impact Ghana's trade balance and economic output.

The Ministry, in collaboration with GIZ Ghana, the European Union, and other development partners, remains committed. They aim to build a strong ecosystem for sustainable growth. This will enhance competitiveness in Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector. The success of this programme could set a precedent for other industrial sectors in Ghana.

Decision-makers will now focus on the implementation phase of the PharmaVax Programme. Key indicators to watch include the speed of policy reforms and the level of foreign direct investment attracted. Progress on increasing local production capacity will also be closely monitored. The programme's success could reduce reliance on imported medicines and improve public health resilience.
