Ghana Launches Responsible Mining Scheme in Akyem Kotoku

The government of Ghana has started a new cooperative mining program. This initiative targets the small-scale gold mining sector. It began in Akyem Kotoku in the Eastern Region. The goal is to encourage mining that is responsible and sustainable. It also aims to involve the community more directly in mining operations.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, launched the scheme. He urged miners and the community to adopt better mining practices. This is for the long-term success of the project. The government has a five-pillar plan to combat illegal mining. This plan also promotes better resource management. These pillars include talking more with stakeholders. Stronger law enforcement is another part. Regulatory changes are also planned. Degraded lands and water bodies will be restored. New job opportunities outside mining will be created.

This initiative fits into Ghana's wider economic goals. The country relies on mining for revenue. Illegal mining has caused significant environmental damage. Water bodies show high levels of turbidity. Forest reserves have also suffered. These new cooperative schemes aim to reverse this trend. They seek to improve environmental quality. This is for the benefit of future generations. The government is investing in sustainable resource management. This is a key part of its economic strategy.

Ms. Ama Mawuenyefia, the National Coordinator for rCOMSDEP, explained the program's aims. The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme is behind this. It focuses on mining that is responsible and puts the community first. The scheme will create jobs for local people. It will also ensure the environment is cared for. Accountability in small-scale mining is a priority. Ms. Mawuenyefia asked traditional leaders and residents for their support. She believes this will help achieve job creation and social development goals.

The Akyem Kotoku Cooperative Mining Scheme will receive special support. It will be the first to get a Gold Katcha machine. This technology improves how much gold miners can get from ore. It helps reduce waste and increases profit for miners. This will also lessen damage to the environment. The training under the rCOMSDEP is important. It teaches miners the skills needed for responsible operations. Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, the Omanhene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, thanked President John Dramani Mahama. He called the initiative visionary. He believes it will help the nation and the local people. The training will promote good practices. Miners will protect the environment and grow the local economy. The traditional authority will fully support this scheme. They hope it becomes a model for other areas.
