The Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, Wael Fathy Ahmed, has called for stronger collaboration between Ghana and Egypt. This partnership aims to advance armwrestling, sports business, sports tourism, and broader sports development across Africa.
Ambassador Fathy made this call during a meeting with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation leadership. The discussions focused on strengthening Ghana-Egypt sports cooperation. Key areas included armwrestling development, its inclusion in the 2027 African Games, and athlete exchanges. The talks also highlighted sports business and tourism opportunities.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader strategy to diversify its economy and leverage non-traditional sectors. Sports tourism, for instance, can attract foreign currency and create jobs. Ghana has recently hosted major sporting events, demonstrating its capacity for such ventures. This collaboration could further boost Ghana's profile as a sports destination.
Ambassador Fathy emphasized that sport provides an important platform for strengthening relations between the two nations. Mr. Osei Asibey stated, “Our objective is to build a partnership that goes beyond the table to technical development, athlete exchanges, business, tourism and sports diplomacy.” He believes Ghana and Egypt can unite Africa to create a stronger future for armwrestling and African sport. This includes coaching programmes, training camps, and competitions.
The meeting also explored connecting Ghanaian and Egyptian business communities through sports. This involves sponsorship, sports marketing, event management, and investment. Major armwrestling events and training camps can promote sports tourism, hospitality, and cultural exchange. This creates a robust economic ecosystem around sports.
