The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Confederation of Danish Industries have launched the Sustainable African Value Chain Initiative (SAVI) in Accra. This new program aims to strengthen the capacity of Ghanaian businesses to integrate sustainability principles into their operations and value chains. The partnership seeks to improve business performance and competitiveness in a global market increasingly focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.

Dr. Kofi Nsiah-Poku, President of AGI, stated that SAVI will help businesses identify sustainability risks and opportunities. The initiative will offer capacity-building programmes, technical assistance, and peer learning sessions. These efforts will translate into concrete actions that enhance business performance and competitiveness. International buyers are imposing stricter sustainability requirements, and new regulations are changing market access.

This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy and its commitment to global climate goals. Ghana aims to become a leading manufacturing and industrial hub in West Africa and within the African Continental Free Trade Area. Achieving this vision requires industries that are productive, innovative, and resource-efficient. Ghana has also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Dr. Nsiah-Poku emphasized that sustainability is increasingly shaping the future of business. Investors now seek companies with strong ESG credentials. Consumers also demand greater transparency in supply chains. He urged businesses to embrace sustainability to benefit from improved efficiency, stronger market access, and enhanced investor confidence. This approach can also reduce operational risks and increase long-term profitability.

Mr. Jakob Linulf, the Danish Ambassador, highlighted the importance of adhering to specific sustainability requirements for African exports to Europe. He stated that the initiative's outcome would ensure Europe, including Denmark, receives more sustainable, high-quality products from Ghanaian manufacturers. Ghana, in return, would benefit from increased exports, new job creation, and stronger economic development. The AGI consistently champions initiatives supporting resource efficiency, climate resilience, and responsible business conduct.

The successful implementation of SAVI could significantly impact Ghana's manufacturing sector. Businesses adopting sustainable practices are likely to attract more foreign investment. This could also open new avenues for trade with European markets. Decision-makers and industry leaders will closely monitor the progress of these capacity-building programs. The initiative’s success is crucial for Ghana’s industrial growth and global competitiveness.
