Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, has declared that the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents a critical step towards unlocking Africa's economic potential. He asserts that the agreement possesses the power to reshape the continent's future if fully executed by member states.
Speaking on "The Y'ello Chair – Episode 8," MTN's vodcast platform, Dr. Yamson stressed that African nations must transition from merely signing agreements to ensuring their effective implementation. He noted a growing realization across Africa that current approaches will not yield different outcomes, necessitating fundamental changes in economic strategy. The success of AfCFTA, a major milestone, hinges on the commitment of member countries to fully enact its provisions.
This push for deeper integration aligns with Ghana's broader economic agenda to enhance regional trade and reduce reliance on external markets. The AfCFTA, headquartered in Accra, aims to create a single market for goods and services across 54 African countries, potentially boosting intra-African trade by 52% by 2022, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Ghana has been a strong advocate for the agreement, viewing it as a pathway to industrialization and job creation.
Dr. Yamson stated that successful implementation would extend beyond facilitating trade to encouraging the free movement of capital, resources, and people across the continent. He specifically called for an immigration policy similar to the European Union's, which would allow people to move, work legally, and respect host country laws. This vision underscores the need for harmonized policies to maximize the benefits of economic integration.
He further argued that Africa's shared future must take precedence over historical divisions, urging countries to strengthen regional and continental cooperation. Dr. Yamson pointed out that despite linguistic differences, such as Anglophone and Francophone countries, Africa shares a common destiny. Economic integration will help African countries focus on common interests, creating larger markets capable of supporting sustainable growth and attracting significant investment.
Looking ahead, Dr. Yamson envisions an Africa where people move freely across borders, governments are managed professionally, and corruption is decisively tackled. He believes these changes will create greater opportunities for future generations. Africa's youthful population, with nearly 70% under the age of 30, represents a significant asset that can be transformed into sustained economic growth through effective policy implementation.
Dr. Yamson concluded that achieving this ambitious vision requires collaborative efforts from both governments and the private sector. He emphasized that working together as one team with a shared goal will make Africa a different continent. The full realization of AfCFTA's potential demands sustained political will and coordinated action from all stakeholders to overcome existing barriers and foster a truly integrated African economy.
