TrustGH, Ghana's first public database for scam phone numbers, has recorded over 3,000 reports of suspicious numbers since its launch. The company announced this figure today. These reported numbers are linked to various fraudulent activities.
These activities include e-commerce fraud, investment scams, job scams, and romance scams. Impersonation and recruitment fraud also feature prominently among the reported cases. More than half of the numbers submitted to TrustGH received a 100% risk score, meaning a very high chance of scam involvement.
This surge in reported scams highlights a growing challenge within Ghana's digital economy. The increase points to the sophistication of fraudsters targeting individuals through online platforms. Scammers often mimic legitimate businesses to defraud unsuspecting Ghanaians of their money. This trend negatively affects consumer trust and digital adoption, critical for economic development.
A TrustGH spokesperson stated these numbers show how widespread and organised scam activity has become. The spokesperson particularly noted the prevalence of scams on social media. “Our goal is to give the public a reliable, data-driven way to verify a number,” the spokesperson said. This verification aims to help people protect themselves and their money.
Reports to TrustGH come from various sources like TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, and SMS messages. TikTok accounts generate the largest share of reports, representing about 50% of the cases. Most reported scam cases, over 90%, involve attempts to demand mobile money payments. They also try to gain access to victims' mobile money accounts. This focus on mobile money indicates a direct financial risk to users of digital payment systems.
TrustGH operates as a licensed platform. It works closely with the Cybersecurity Authority and the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service. This collaboration supports investigations into reported numbers and helps combat scam activity. The platform urges the public to verify any unfamiliar phone number on trustgh.com. This check should occur before making payments or sharing personal information. Reporting suspicious numbers helps strengthen the platform's database and protect others.
The continuous reporting of scam numbers provides valuable data for law enforcement agencies. This data helps them understand evolving fraud patterns and identify key perpetrators. Increased public awareness and vigilance are crucial in mitigating financial losses due to these scams. The efforts by TrustGH contribute to building a safer digital environment for all Ghanaians.
