Telecel Ghana has launched the Ashanti Codes initiative in Kumasi. This program will equip 1,000 young people with essential digital and artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The 12-week training focuses on students from Kumasi and Obuasi, with 70% of participants being girls.
This initiative expands Telecel's efforts to promote digitalization and AI education among Ghana's youth. The program helps young people prepare for a technology-driven future. Students showcased innovative projects during the launch, including driverless vehicles and smart toll gates.
This program fits into Ghana's broader goal of boosting its digital economy. Data from the Ministry of Communications indicates a strong push for digital literacy across the country. Government initiatives complement private sector efforts like Ashanti Codes to build a skilled workforce. This focus supports Ghana's long-term economic growth and global competitiveness.
Komla Buami, External Affairs Director at Telecel Ghana, emphasized the importance of this training. He stated Telecel believes equipping young people with these skills will integrate into their lives. The Telecel Foundation also trains teachers to become digital skills trainers. They provide standard kits aligned with the Ghana Education Service curriculum. This makes teaching technology easier and more effective in schools.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, praised Telecel Ghana's contribution. He noted the government trains about 2,300 older youth in digital skills across the region. Telecel's commitment to train 1,000 youth significantly adds to this number. The Minister pledged his full support for the initiative. He highlighted the need to prepare young people for technological advancements.
Dr. Michael Essuman, Board Chair of the Ghana Library Authority, called digital literacy critical for Ghana’s economic future. He urged participants, especially girls, to take the program seriously. He stressed that the country's economic future is increasingly digital. These skills are vital for future employment and innovation.
The Ashanti Codes initiative forms part of Telecel Ghana’s wider commitment. It aims to empower young people with the digital and coding skills needed in a technology-driven world. This move will help create a skilled workforce for Ghana's growing technology sector. It also supports economic diversification and job creation. The program’s success could encourage more private sector investment in youth digital training.
