Ghanaian digital health startup Synchora Health has launched a pilot electronic immunization follow-up system in the Ashanti Region. This system aims to reduce childhood vaccine dropout rates, which can reach 50 percent. The pilot is currently operating across three health facilities in the Juaben Municipal District.
The three-month pilot, supported by D-Prize, targets improving immunization completion for more than 300 children. It uses automated voice calls and SMS reminders to caregivers. These reminders are sent in their preferred local language, addressing a key barrier to consistent vaccination.
This initiative fits into Ghana's broader public health strategy to enhance healthcare delivery through technology. High vaccine dropout rates pose a significant challenge to national health outcomes. The reliance on paper-based records and inadequate reminders have historically contributed to this issue.
Shadrach Tetteh Boyetey, Co-founder and Lead at Synchora Health, stated the platform strengthens follow-up systems without increasing health worker workload. He emphasized that missed appointments lead to preventable illnesses. The system aims to close this gap through better coordination.
The platform digitizes immunization follow-up by allowing nurses to register children electronically at the point of care. It then provides community health workers with real-time updates on missed appointments. This real-time data helps identify children who need follow-up.
Emmanuel Amankwa, Municipal Disease Control and Public Health Officer at the Juaben Municipal Health Directorate, believes the system will reduce missed opportunities. He expects it to increase immunization coverage significantly. Health officials hope to expand this system to other districts and facilities.
Bempah Philip Bonsu, Principal Community Health Nurse at Juaben Government Hospital, noted the system reduces paperwork. He explained that digitizing records on machines or phones will limit the workload for health workers. This efficiency gain is crucial for resource-constrained settings.
The Juaben deployment is Synchora Health’s first field implementation after receiving support from D-Prize’s Child Immunization Challenge. The pilot will assess the effectiveness of low-cost digital communication tools. It seeks to determine if these tools can improve vaccine completion rates within Ghana’s public health system.
