Elon Musk's SpaceX has overtaken Amazon to become the world's fifth most valuable company. The rocket company's value reached $2.78 trillion, surpassing Amazon's $2.66 trillion valuation.
This significant increase in SpaceX's value followed its listing on the tech-focused Nasdaq stock exchange. Days after its public offering, the company's share price surged by more than 50%. The acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion further propelled this valuation.
This development highlights a growing trend of investor confidence in technology and future-oriented companies, even those yet to achieve consistent profitability. While Ghana's economy, valued around GHS 1.25 trillion (approximately $100 billion), operates on a different scale, the global shift towards high-tech investment trends influences local market sentiment. Major technological advancements often reshape investment flows, indirectly impacting emerging markets like Ghana by setting new industry standards and fostering innovation.
SpaceX announced it would take over Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, which develops artificial intelligence coding agents. This strategic move aims to bolster SpaceX's presence in the competitive artificial intelligence sector. SpaceX and Cursor have maintained a partnership since April, with the acquisition solidifying their collaboration.
The company's soaring shares reflect investor enthusiasm for its ambitious vision, including sending AI data centres to space and facilitating human colonisation of Mars. Its initial public offering successfully raised $85.7 billion. SpaceX sold its shares to the public at $135 each; they have since risen to $209.
Analysts, however, question the long-term sustainability of SpaceX's high share price. They point to significant uncertainties surrounding its future earnings. Major corporations like Stripe, Adobe, and Nvidia currently use Cursor's technology.
Amazon remains a household name with a brand deeply embedded in daily life, while SpaceX is less known to the general public. Despite SpaceX's higher stock market value, the companies' financial performances present a stark contrast.
In the first quarter of 2026, Amazon reported a profit of $30.3 billion. In contrast, SpaceX, a future-focused enterprise, recorded a loss of $4.3 billion. Amazon generated sales of $716.9 billion in 2025, against SpaceX's sales of $18.67 billion in the same year. This indicates that investors are largely betting on SpaceX's future potential and growth rather than current profitability.
SpaceX's primary focus is manufacturing and launching rockets with reusable components. The company also manufactures and deploys Starlink internet satellites. It is actively expanding its presence in the artificial intelligence sector. This includes growing its AI business, xAI, which developed the Grok chatbot.
The deal with Cursor will be completed by the end of September. Cursor's shareholders will receive $60 billion worth of SpaceX shares. This indicates a strong belief in the future value of SpaceX's equity. This strategic acquisition further positions SpaceX to leverage AI in its diverse operations.
