The Saba Innovation Hub in Tamale has launched its first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Bootcamp. Over 80 basic school pupils from Northern Ghana are participating in this inaugural event. The program focuses on students from underserved and rural communities.
Participants come from the Tolon District, Kumbungu District, Sagnarigu Municipality, and Tamale Metropolis. The bootcamp, running from August 10 to 14, 2026, aims to introduce young learners to practical STEM concepts. This initiative addresses the disparity in STEM education between urban and rural schools.
STEM education is crucial for socio-economic development, as seen in Asian countries like Japan and Singapore. These nations achieved significant economic transformation through massive investments in STEM. African countries, including Ghana, have lagged due to insufficient investment in this area.
Many underprivileged communities in Ghana lack adequate teachers and teaching materials for STEM. This bootcamp seeks to promote STEM from the grassroots level. It emulates the successful development strategies of Asian countries.
The first day of the bootcamp introduced participants to STEM and innovation. Learners explored the basics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Practical examples, such as generating biogas from cow dung, were provided. Videos highlighted the impact of STEM on the growth of Asian Tigers and the achievements of innovators like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.
The second day will cover robotics, coding, and artificial intelligence. Students will learn the fundamentals of these fields. They will build and operate robots using advanced kits. This prepares them for global challenges solvable with these technologies.
On the third day, learners will engage in chemistry, physics, and biology experiments. This will help them appreciate scientific principles from their textbooks. Engineering and mathematics practicals will follow. Children will learn about vehicle engines and calculations for areas and volumes.
The final day is dedicated to creative arts. Experienced professionals will guide students through basic creative arts concepts. An exhibition will showcase innovative prototypes created by the learners. Prizes will be awarded for the best three prototypes to encourage further innovation.
The program will conclude with a career guidance session. This is especially for Junior High School pupils. It will assist them with program selections at the Senior High School level. The Innovation Hub also operates a STEAMI/STEM on Wheel Van. This mobile unit visits basic schools, particularly in underserved areas, to promote practical STEM education.
Professor Courage Kosi Setsoafia Saba, CEO of the Innovation Hub, led the introduction to STEM and Innovation. He is a professor at the University for Development Studies, Tamale. He receives support from Dr. Stephen Wilson Kpordze, Mr. Emmanuel Dear Akpatsu, and Mr. Sayibu Sulemana Wumbei.
