MTN Ghana has committed GHS 1.1 billion to significantly expand its network infrastructure across the country. This substantial investment aims to improve network connectivity and support the national drive towards a cashless economy. The company plans to establish 800 new cell sites, enhancing service availability and reliability for its growing customer base.

Mr. David Nana Addei, MTN Ghana’s Mobile Money (MOMO) Manager for Northern Ghana, stated the company's dedication to reducing reliance on physical cash. He explained that the MOMO application helps protect traders from theft and robbery by minimizing the need to carry large sums of money. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize Ghana's financial landscape and improve transaction security.

This investment fits into Ghana's ongoing economic transformation, which prioritizes digital financial services. The Bank of Ghana has actively promoted mobile money usage to boost financial inclusion and streamline transactions. Data from the Bank of Ghana shows a consistent increase in mobile money transaction volumes and values over the past five years, underscoring its growing importance in the economy. This trend reflects a national shift towards digital payments, reducing the costs and risks associated with cash handling.

Mr. Addei highlighted that MOMO has recruited over 350,000 agents nationwide, providing essential services and products to customers. He also mentioned the establishment of 'MTN Community Shops' to offer services like SIM card purchases, replacements, and PIN code resets, reducing the need for customers to visit main MTN offices. Dr. Lawrence Akosen, Senior Manager for Customer Experience Planning and Enablement at MTN Ghana, reaffirmed the company's commitment to delivering quality services and building customer trust.

The expansion is expected to significantly improve network coverage, especially in underserved rural areas. This will facilitate greater access to digital financial services and other online resources, potentially boosting local economies. Decision-makers and market observers will closely watch the implementation of these new sites and their impact on mobile money adoption rates. The success of this expansion could set a precedent for further digital infrastructure investments in Ghana.

MTN Ghana's commitment to innovation and corporate social responsibility also underpins this expansion. Dr. Akosen noted that excellent customer care has been central to the company's operations for 30 years. This long-standing dedication aims to ensure that the network expansion not only improves technical capabilities but also enhances the overall customer experience. The company's efforts are crucial for sustaining the growth of Ghana's digital economy.
