Ghanaian digital commerce company Hubtel is deepening its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This partnership aims to explore new opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI), data management, cybersecurity, and resilient digital payments infrastructure. Hubtel's full Board of Directors and executive leadership team spent two days at the AWS Executive Briefing Center in Seattle, United States, on July 9 and 10, 2026.

The visit, led by Hubtel Board Chairperson Patience Akyianu and Chief Executive Officer Alex Bram, engaged specialists on emerging technologies. These technologies are shaping the future of financial services. Hubtel stated this engagement moves its relationship with AWS beyond basic cloud infrastructure support. It now focuses on building advanced data and AI capabilities. These advancements will improve the speed, security, and reliability of digital payments and commerce services for businesses and consumers across Ghana.

This strategic collaboration is crucial for Ghana's rapidly expanding digital economy. The nation is increasingly adopting digital payment solutions and e-commerce platforms. Enhancing the underlying technology infrastructure, especially in AI and cybersecurity, is vital for sustained growth and consumer trust. This move positions Hubtel to leverage global best practices, potentially setting new benchmarks for local digital service providers. It also aligns with broader national efforts to digitize the economy and improve financial inclusion.

Alex Bram, Hubtel's CEO, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He stated, "We’re not just running payments infrastructure; we’re building the data and AI capability that will let Ghanaian businesses compete on the best available standards." He added that this partnership provides Hubtel with access to global expertise in data, security, and technology modernization. This expertise can be directly applied to Ghana’s growing digital economy, fostering innovation and resilience.

The two-day program covered critical areas including AI strategy, machine learning, generative AI, data governance, enterprise resilience, and cybersecurity. AWS specialists guided Hubtel’s leadership through sessions on building innovation cultures and applying AI in financial services. They also focused on transforming data into business value. A key highlight was an engagement with Tom Soderstrom, AWS Executive in Residence and former Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mr. Soderstrom shared insights on innovation culture, experimentation, and balancing technology investments with risk management, reinforcing the need for continuous innovation.

Hubtel, founded in Accra in 2005, has evolved from a messaging company into a comprehensive digital commerce platform. It offers consumer payments, merchant services, delivery solutions, transactional credit, and government payment collection services. The company supports businesses, financial institutions, and public sector organizations through its digital platforms. It employs about 660 people, making it a significant player in Ghana's tech sector. This deepened partnership with AWS is expected to further solidify Hubtel's market position and expand its service offerings.

AWS, one of the world’s largest cloud computing providers, supports financial institutions and technology companies globally. It provides cloud infrastructure, security, and artificial intelligence services. The Seattle engagement marks the beginning of closer collaboration between Hubtel and AWS on data, AI, resilience, and security. Further initiatives are expected as the partnership develops. Applying global technology practices locally could significantly support businesses, developers, and consumers as Ghana’s digital economy continues to expand. This collaboration will likely lead to more secure and efficient digital transactions, benefiting the entire ecosystem.
