Take Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has initiated legal proceedings in a New York court. The company demands that Microsoft-owned GitHub and chat app Discord reveal user details. These users are suspected of sharing copyrighted material related to the highly anticipated video game, Grand Theft Auto 6.

This legal action follows a series of apparent leaks showing footage of GTA 6 in action. The leaks emerged just weeks before Rockstar Games planned a special 30-minute 'extended look' at the game on Netflix. Rockstar has not publicly commented on the leaked clips since they first appeared.

The leaks have sparked debate among fans and industry experts. Many fans describe the situation as a 'nightmare scenario' for the company. However, game developers and journalists offer a more nuanced perspective on the potential impact.

Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director for major GTA titles, believes the significance of the leaks is overstated. He noted that Rockstar's ability to keep projects secret is remarkable given their complexity. Vermeij suggested that the vast majority of gamers do not actively seek out these leaked clips online. He expects the leaks to have no lasting impact on the game's success.

Wesley Yin-Poole, director of news at IGN, acknowledged the leaks would be tough for developers. He highlighted that GTA 6 is an enormous undertaking, built over a decade by thousands of people. Despite this, Yin-Poole believes the leaks will ultimately become a 'footnote' in the game's development history. He expects most players to reserve judgment until official footage or the game itself is released.

The group behind the leaks claims to act in players' interests, citing Rockstar's alleged 'anti-consumer practices.' One such practice is the decision not to release a disc version of GTA 6 at launch. However, many observers are skeptical of these motivations. They point to requests for cryptocurrency 'donations' accompanying the leaked material. Stop Killing Games, a campaign group, criticized the leaks as 'destructive' and urged against sending money to the perpetrators.

Rockstar's strategy of keeping game details secret creates immense anticipation. This approach, while effective, means every piece of information gets 'blown out of proportion,' according to Vermeij. The company has released two official trailers for GTA 6, the most recent in May 2025. Fans have meticulously analyzed every official post for clues about the game.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC release is expected at a later date. Industry experts widely anticipate the game to be a significant cultural event. The current legal actions and leaks are unlikely to derail its potential success.
