Digital Payments Boost Ghana SMEs, Unlock Credit

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana are rapidly adopting mobile money and digital payment systems. This change helps them improve financial management, increase operational efficiency, and gain better access to credit. MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL) states these digital tools are transforming business operations across the country.

The move to digital payments addresses major challenges faced by SMEs. Many businesses previously struggled with handling cash, including risks of theft and a lack of clear sight over daily transactions. Digital solutions now provide owners with better financial oversight, reducing the need for physical cash and its associated dangers.

This adoption of digital financial services is a significant part of Ghana's broader economic digitisation efforts. It builds on previous trends of mobile money penetration and aims to deepen financial inclusion, especially for businesses outside major urban centers. Improved digital infrastructure supports this shift, making it easier for even small businesses to integrate these tools.

Abdul Razak Issaka-Ali, Chief Commercial Operations Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD, explained the impact. He said, “At the heart of this evolution is MMFL’s commitment to transforming the way people do business for the better. It is not just about digitising payments; it is about creating real impact for businesses.” This highlights the company's role in driving technological change.

The improved visibility from digital transactions helps SMEs build credible financial records. This allows them to demonstrate their creditworthiness more easily to lenders. Instead of relying solely on traditional collateral, financial institutions can now assess businesses based on their actual financial activity. This opens new opportunities for growth and investment for many small businesses.

Looking ahead, continued innovation in digital financial services will be crucial. There remains significant potential to expand digital financial inclusion further, especially in rural and underserved areas. Stronger partnerships across the financial sector and customer-focused solutions will likely empower more Ghanaian businesses. This will support Ghana’s transition towards a more inclusive and digital economy.

Mr. Issaka-Ali's remarks were made ahead of the 2026 World SME Day, observed on June 27. His comments were part of the Citi Business Festival's on-air series. MMFL's MoMo App offers a wide range of services, including insurance, loans, savings, and merchant payments. Such platforms are central to the digital transformation observed in the SME sector.

The commitment from companies like MobileMoney Fintech LTD to provide these financial solutions underscores ongoing efforts. These efforts aim to empower individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Ghana. Real-time transaction monitoring and secure payment reception are examples of these empowering features. These features help minimize internal leakages and improve accountability in businesses.
