Ghana will host a continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) hackathon in September 2026, bringing together over 200 young innovators from more than 12 countries. This 48-hour event in Accra aims to develop working AI prototypes, moving Africa beyond strategic documents to practical implementation.
The hackathon, named the Execute Africa AI Challenge 2026, is a government-backed initiative. It seeks to transform national AI plans into technology that directly benefits ordinary people. Participants will focus on creating solutions in five key sectors: financial technology, health, agriculture, climate, and government services.
This event fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to become a leader in digital innovation. Ghana published its own National AI Strategy earlier in 2026. The hackathon directly supports this strategy by emphasizing capacity building and responsible AI adoption. It also aims to develop a robust AI ecosystem within the country and across the continent.
Mr. Carlos Amoako, CEO and Founder of AlphaVecta Technologies, the organiser of One Vecta Africa AI Week, stated, “Africa doesn't lack ideas; instead, it faces an execution gap that can be bridged through action, not just discussion.” This highlights the event's focus on practical outcomes over theoretical discussions.
The hackathon's implications are significant for Africa's technological future. Winners will receive seed funding and incubation support, not just cash prizes. This approach aims to help promising projects develop beyond initial prototypes into viable solutions. The event also brings together young developers with senior delegates from government, banking, and investment sectors, fostering collaboration and potential investment opportunities.
The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations formally endorses the event. This endorsement signals the government's commitment to active implementation of its AI strategy. It moves beyond merely hosting conferences to fostering tangible development. This support is crucial for building local capacity and ensuring AI solutions address specific African challenges.

Registration for the Execute Africa AI Challenge 2026 is currently open. The hackathon will take place from September 5–9 at The Palms by Eagles in Accra. This initiative represents a concrete step towards turning Africa's AI ambitions into practical, impactful realities.
