Ghana to introduce AI and coding in basic school curriculum

    Ghana's Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, announced a revised basic school curriculum that introduces artificial intelligence (AI), coding, electronics, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). This new curriculum will be formally presented to the Ministry of Education this week. The reform covers education from kindergarten to junior high school (JHS), aiming to equip learners with essential skills for a technology-driven future.

    The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) was tasked with reviewing the existing curriculum. This review seeks to better prepare Ghanaian pupils for the demands of a modern, technology-focused world. The Minister highlighted this as one of the government's most significant education reforms.

    This initiative fits into Ghana's broader economic strategy to foster a skilled workforce capable of participating in the digital economy. Integrating advanced technological subjects at an early stage aligns with global trends in education and national efforts to boost science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Previous government policies have also focused on enhancing STEM capabilities to drive economic growth and innovation.

    Minister Iddrisu stated, "One of the most significant decisions we took as government was to revise our education curriculum, and the agency responsible is NaCCA." He added that the revised curriculum would be submitted to President John Mahama for approval, then to Cabinet and Parliament for consideration. This multi-stage approval process underscores the importance and comprehensive nature of the educational overhaul.

    The revised curriculum will strengthen STEM education by introducing new learning areas. Mr. Iddrisu explained, "The revision of our curriculum is to ensure a Smart Start curriculum for greater integration of technology, science, engineering, and mathematics." He confirmed that coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, and TVET would be new additions to the basic education curriculum.

    Beyond technological skills, the curriculum will also emphasize ethics, patriotism, and civic responsibility. This holistic approach aims to shape responsible citizens who understand their role in national development. The Minister stressed the importance of children learning about state resources and civic duties from a young age.

    The government is also strengthening basic education through increased funding. Mr. Iddrisu mentioned improvements to the capitation grant, ensuring its timely release to schools. He confirmed that payments have already been made to over 5,681,000 beneficiaries. This financial support is crucial for the effective implementation of the new curriculum and overall educational quality.

    The introduction of AI and coding into basic education could significantly impact Ghana's future workforce and economic competitiveness. Decision-makers and industry leaders will closely watch the curriculum's implementation and its initial outcomes.
