AI Becomes Essential to Combat Rising Cybercrime

    Cybersecurity expert warns traditional defenses are failing against AI-powered attacks.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become the sole effective method to combat the growing sophistication of cybercrime. Dr. Martin Nana Annan, a prominent Cybersecurity, AI, and Information Systems Expert, stated this during the Ecobank–JoyNews Business Financial Dialogue on July 28. He highlighted that cybercriminals increasingly deploy AI-powered tools that traditional cybersecurity systems cannot detect.

    This development fundamentally transforms digital finance by shifting cybersecurity from reactive defense to predictive, real-time automation. AI-powered systems can identify and respond to threats before they cause significant damage. The rapid evolution of information technology has brought significant advancements, but the prevalence of cybercrime has slowed confidence in digitalization, especially within the financial sector.

    Ghana's economic landscape, like many developing nations, is increasingly reliant on digital transactions and services. The rise of sophisticated cyber threats poses a direct risk to financial stability and consumer trust in digital platforms. This trend could impede the nation's broader digitalization agenda, which aims to boost economic efficiency and inclusion. Previous efforts to enhance digital infrastructure, such as the national digital addressing system, could be undermined if cybersecurity concerns are not adequately addressed.

    Dr. Annan emphasized that organizations must adopt AI-powered security tools to defend their systems. He explained, "AI now becomes the only way to leverage and counter cybercrime because these criminals are using sophisticated algorithms that are difficult for humans to comprehend and also counter." He added that leveraging machine learning and other sophisticated algorithms with AI is crucial for defense.

    One clear example of AI's impact on cybercrime is the emergence of polymorphic malware. This type of malware continuously changes its characteristics as it moves through a computer system. Traditional antivirus software struggles to detect such evolving threats, rendering them useless. AI-powered systems, including machine learning and large language models, are essential for detecting and responding to these dynamic threats.

    The cybersecurity expert noted that the battle against cybercrime is a constant contest between those developing digital systems and those exploiting their weaknesses. He warned that AI-powered voice cloning and video cloning technologies are creating new avenues for fraud. This makes it increasingly important for organizations and regulators to strengthen cybersecurity frameworks and ensure a level playing field.

    The implications for Ghana's financial sector are significant. Banks and other financial institutions must invest heavily in AI-driven cybersecurity solutions to protect customer data and financial assets. Regulators, such as the Bank of Ghana, will need to update their frameworks to address these new AI-powered threats. Failure to adapt could lead to substantial financial losses and a decline in public trust in digital banking services. This ongoing technological arms race will shape the future of digital security and finance in the country.
