Academic City University has been selected as one of 49 higher education institutions globally to join the inaugural Future Universities Alliance Innovation Sandbox. This 12-month initiative, incubated at Duke University in the United States, aims to accelerate innovation and institutional transformation in tertiary education worldwide. The program runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, bringing together universities from 23 countries across five continents.
The Innovation Sandbox provides a platform for peer learning, knowledge exchange, and collaborative problem-solving among participating institutions. Academic City will specifically engage in the New Initiatives & Structural Transformations pathway. The university will share its work on "Embedding Venture Creation into the Academic Core," focusing on integrating entrepreneurship and innovation across its academic programs.
This selection positions Academic City within a broader global effort to address critical challenges facing higher education, including curriculum redesign, pedagogy, and expanding access to quality education. Ghana's educational sector, like many others, is undergoing significant changes to align with global demands for innovation and entrepreneurship. Professor Fred McBagonluri, President of Academic City University, described the selection as an affirmation of the university's vision. He stated that the recognition highlights their commitment to building a future-ready institution that is both globally connected and locally relevant. Professor McBagonluri emphasized that Academic City's unique approach, built around innovation and entrepreneurship from its inception, offers a distinct African perspective to the global dialogue on higher education.
Noah Pickus, founder of the Future Universities Alliance and Head of Global Strategy and Partnerships at Duke University, noted the initiative's importance. He explained that the Innovation Sandbox addresses the lack of structures needed to connect, share, and sustain innovation in higher education. This collaboration will allow Academic City to exchange ideas with peer institutions facing similar challenges in governance, faculty engagement, curriculum design, and measuring innovation-driven learning outcomes.
The program's structure includes monthly facilitated sessions, executive milestone reviews, and a Global Summit. This summit will take place in Durham, North Carolina, from October 3 to 5, 2026. Academic City's involvement at this critical stage of its growth, following major structural reforms, underscores its commitment to embedding innovation across its governance, academic programs, and organizational systems. This engagement is expected to foster significant advancements in its educational model and contribute to Ghana's innovation ecosystem.
