Tema Regional Police Command arrested two men after intercepting a truck carrying 56 sacks of suspected Indian hemp. The intelligence-led operation took place at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, June 14, 2026. This action signifies a significant disruption of illegal drug supply lines within Ghana.

Police acted on intelligence received from the Volta Regional Police Command, which had tracked the vehicle. The truck, a green HOWO tipper with registration number GN 2287-24, was travelling from Juapong towards Tema. This coordinated effort between regional police commands showcases enhanced inter-agency cooperation in law enforcement.

This seizure forms part of Ghana's broader struggle against illicit drug trafficking, which impacts public health and national security. The illegal narcotics trade often fuels other criminal activities and can destabilise local communities. Recent data indicates an increase in drug-related arrests, reflecting intensified police efforts.

DSP Dede Dzakpasu confirmed the suspects' identities as 26-year-old driver Solomon Akuaku and his 31-year-old mate, James Tetteh. Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was bound for an individual known only as “Red,” who police believe was orchestrating the transport. The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and appealed for public support.

The two suspects are aiding police in their investigations, and authorities have retained the suspected narcotics as evidence. Police efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the alleged owner of the consignment, “Red.” This ongoing investigation could lead to dismantling a larger drug distribution network. Further arrests are anticipated as the police continue their probe into the origins and intended destination of the drugs. This incident underscores the persistent challenge of drug smuggling within Ghana's borders and the vigilance required from law enforcement agencies.
