Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has formally resigned from the Council of State. President John Dramani Mahama accepted her resignation on Monday, June 15, concluding a period of consultation. The government has begun the process to appoint her replacement in line with constitutional requirements.

Ms. Akuffo first submitted her resignation letter in September 2025. She did not provide specific reasons for her decision to step down from the advisory body. The Council of State had intervened, requesting time to engage Ms. Akuffo before the President formally accepted the resignation.

This departure marks the first high-profile exit from the current Council of State. The Council plays a vital role in Ghana’s governance. It advises the President on critical matters of national development and policy. This impacts the broader political landscape and the decision-making process within the executive branch.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, confirmed the resignation. He stated, "I can confirm that indeed, Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo has resigned from her position as a member of the Council of State." He added that the Council had informed the President that their engagement with Ms. Akuffo did not change her decision. The Council then advised the President to accept her resignation.

The government will now initiate the legally prescribed process to fill the vacant position. A replacement is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Decision-makers will closely monitor this appointment. It will ensure the continued effective functioning of the constitutional advisory body.

Justice Akuffo served as Chief Justice from 2017 until her retirement in 2020. She was appointed to the Council of State as one of the eminent persons by the President. These members provide crucial advice on various national issues. Her departure creates a significant gap on the body. The Council assists the President in fulfilling his duties under the 1992 Constitution. This change could prompt discussions on the composition and influence of the Council of State. It could also influence public perception of its role in national governance. The replacement process will be keenly observed for its transparency and adherence to constitutional provisions.
