Police recover weapons after foiling robbery plot

Police have foiled a planned robbery. They recovered a cache of weapons. The operation targeted a notorious robbery syndicate in the Ashanti North region. This success came after acting on important intelligence.

The police team carried out an operation on June 2. They were targeting a robbery suspect named Ali Mohammed, aged 23. Mohammed was wanted for a murder on April 12, 2026. This killing happened along the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road. The suspect was also linked to two other robbery attacks. These occurred in July 2025 and February 2026. These crimes took place on the Mampong–Ejura road. A driver’s mate reportedly died in each of those robberies.

The operation took place in Kukuom, Ahafo Region. During the police action, the suspect opened fire. He used an AK-47 rifle. Police officers quickly overpowered him. He sustained gunshot wounds. Ali Mohammed was taken to the Goaso Government Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The recovered items are significant. They include one AK-47 rifle and one pump-action gun. Two AK-47 magazines were also found. Police retrieved nine rounds of ammunition. Three mobile phones were among the items. A motorbike ignition key was also recovered. Other items included a black nose mask, four talismans, and a sack.

Efforts are ongoing to find other members of the syndicate. Police have identified Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, and Suley. These individuals are currently at large. The seized weapons suggest a capacity for serious violence. Their removal is a blow to organized criminal activity.

This incident highlights the persistent challenge of armed crime in Ghana. The amounts of ammunition and weapon types suggest a well-equipped criminal network. The use of an AK-47 rifle indicates a high level of threat faced by law enforcement. Such finds also suggest potential links to illegal arms trafficking. The ongoing investigation into the wider syndicate is critical. It aims to dismantle the group and prevent future attacks.

The intervention by the police is a crucial step in maintaining public order. Recovering these weapons prevents them from being used in future criminal acts. It also brings a degree of justice for the victims of past robberies and killings. The police statement on Friday confirmed the details of the operation.

The success of this operation by the Surveillance Unit and Ashanti North Regional Police Command demonstrates effective intelligence gathering. It also shows strong operational execution. The police promise to continue their work. They aim to maintain peace and security across the nation. The investigation will focus on tracing the origin of the weapons and identifying all accomplices.
