Police Dismantle Mobile Money Robbery Gang, Recover Weapons

Ghana Police have dismantled a robbery gang responsible for stealing GHS 430,000 from mobile money vendors. The incident occurred at the Buipe Cattle Market in the Savannah Region. This swift police action led to the arrest of a key suspect and the death of three accomplices.

The Savannah Regional Police Command, supported by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, made significant progress. They arrested suspect Yacouba Oumar, 28, on July 23, 2026. This arrest followed a robbery on June 29, 2026, where GHS 430,000 was stolen. The police also retrieved one pump-action gun and a single-barrel gun believed to be used in the crime.

This incident underscores the persistent security risks faced by businesses, especially mobile money operators, in Ghana's regional markets. Such robberies disrupt local commerce and deter investment in these vital economic hubs. The high value of the stolen funds, GHS 430,000, represents a significant loss for the affected vendors. It also impacts the broader financial ecosystem in the region. The police response demonstrates a commitment to protecting economic activities and ensuring public safety.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) deployed a specialized team to assist with investigations. This deployment highlights the seriousness with which authorities view such organized crime. Suspect Yacouba Oumar admitted his involvement during interrogation. He also identified his accomplices, including Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, and Oumaro Amadu. Oumar further disclosed that a cattle trader, Alhaji Yacouba, contracted the group for the robbery.

The police pursued the gang across multiple locations, including Atebubu and Agogo. An exchange of fire with the suspects resulted in the deaths of Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, and Oumaro Amadu. Their bodies are currently at the morgue for preservation and autopsy. This outcome reflects the dangerous nature of combating armed robbery gangs in Ghana.

Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities are actively working to apprehend Alhaji Yacouba and other individuals connected to the robbery. This continued effort aims to fully dismantle the criminal network. The successful operation sends a strong message to criminal elements targeting financial transactions. It also reassures mobile money vendors and market traders about police protection. The focus now shifts to bringing all perpetrators to justice. This will help restore confidence in the security of regional economic activities. The police's sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering proved crucial in this operation. This approach is vital for maintaining law and order across the country. The incident also highlights the need for continued vigilance and security upgrades for mobile money operations. Protecting these services is essential for financial inclusion and economic growth in Ghana.
