Tema Regional Police Commander DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu has urged residents and Ghanaians to embrace peace during the Homowo 2026 Festival. He stated that sustainable development, security, and prosperity can only flourish in a peaceful society.
DCOP Asiedu made these remarks as the special guest of honour at the official media launch of Homowo 2026. He reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service's commitment to working with traditional authorities and community stakeholders. This collaboration aims to ensure a peaceful, safe, and incident-free celebration throughout the festival period.
This emphasis on peace comes as Ghana prepares for various national activities, making stability particularly critical. The nation's economic progress and ability to attract investment depend heavily on a calm and secure environment. Historical data consistently shows that periods of social unrest deter foreign direct investment and disrupt local commerce.
DCOP Asiedu expressed gratitude to the Teshie Traditional Council for the invitation. He described it as a demonstration of the enduring partnership between the Ghana Police Service and traditional institutions. This partnership is vital for promoting peace and maintaining public order during large cultural events.
The Regional Commander noted that the relationship between the Police Service and traditional leaders remains critical. It helps preserve peace and fosters harmonious communities, especially during major cultural celebrations. These events often attract large gatherings, requiring careful management to prevent any disturbances.
DCOP Asiedu described Homowo as one of Ghana's most significant traditional festivals. He emphasised that it represents much more than a cultural celebration. The festival serves as a period of thanksgiving, unity, reconciliation, and reflection on the history and resilience of the Ga people. It reminds present and future generations of the importance of communal living.
He observed that this year's festival theme, 'Let Peace Be Given a Chance,' is very timely. He stressed that peace remains indispensable to every aspect of national life. Stable societies are better positioned to pursue development, attract investment, and improve citizens' quality of life. Without peace, meaningful progress becomes impossible.
DCOP Asiedu explained that peace-building is a collective duty, not solely the responsibility of security agencies. It involves every individual, community, and institution. Peaceful coexistence positively impacts individual wellbeing, contributing to better physical and mental health. It reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep quality, and enables clear thinking and sound decision-making.
He also highlighted peace's role in protecting fundamental human rights. Peaceful societies allow people to live without fear of violence, injury, or displacement. At the community level, peace provides safety and security by preventing the destruction of lives and property. It strengthens stability within neighbourhoods and across the nation.
Effective peace-building helps prevent disputes before they occur. It also ensures that existing disagreements do not escalate into conflict. Peace strengthens unity and cooperation, encouraging citizens, communities, and institutions to work together. This collaboration helps address common challenges and achieve shared development goals.
DCOP Asiedu also highlighted the economic importance of maintaining peace. Stable societies create favourable conditions for investment, business expansion, and job creation. Peaceful environments encourage trade, strengthen markets, and boost investor confidence. In contrast, conflicts undermine economic growth by destroying businesses and discouraging investment. Peaceful societies can devote greater resources to healthcare, education, infrastructure, and community development. This avoids spending public funds on repairing damage caused by violence.
