The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has elected Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, known as COKA, as its new chairman. COKA secured 663 votes, replacing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who polled 269 votes.

This leadership change is more than a routine transition; it signals a deliberate shift in the party's regional approach. COKA campaigned on a promise of “less speeches and more work,” distinguishing his style from the personality-driven politics of his predecessor. His victory reflects a desire among delegates for a more consultative and behind-the-scenes leadership.

The Ashanti Region is a crucial stronghold for the NPP, making this leadership change particularly significant for the party's national electoral prospects. The region consistently delivers a substantial number of votes, influencing the broader political landscape. This transition occurs as the NPP prepares for future elections, aiming to consolidate its base and address internal dynamics. The party's ability to adapt its regional leadership style could impact its overall performance.

COKA’s political journey spans decades within the NPP’s grassroots structures. He served as Ward Organiser, Ward Chairman, Regional Financial Secretary, and Constituency Chairman for Afigya Kwabre for five terms. He also chaired the Conference of Constituency Chairmen in Ashanti for two terms, demonstrating deep party machinery understanding. This extensive experience has earned him a reputation as an accessible and consultative leader.

COKA also brings a strong academic and professional background to his new role. He holds a degree in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management from UPSA. His professional experience includes over two decades as a private-sector executive, with involvement in hospitality, construction, transportation, and haulage. This diverse profile combines political acumen with business and academic rigor.

The contrast with Chairman Wontumi is stark. Wontumi was known for his energetic, outspoken, and often jovial public persona. His supporters viewed this as a strength, while critics sometimes saw it as overly flamboyant. COKA, by contrast, projects a calmer public image, focusing on organization, structure, and measurable electoral results. This shift suggests the Ashanti NPP is embracing a different communication style during a critical period for the party.

The circumstances of Wontumi's departure are also notable. He had served three terms and defeated COKA in the 2022 regional contest, polling 464 votes against COKA's 306. Wontumi had declared his intention to contest the NPP's national chairmanship. However, his regional tenure ended abruptly in July 2026 when an Accra High Court convicted him. This unexpected turn of events paved the way for COKA's ascent, marking a new chapter for the NPP in its most vital region.
