The National Media Commission (NMC) has reconstituted the boards of four state-owned media organisations. This significant governance change impacts the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), and New Times Corporation.

The NMC announced these appointments in a statement, confirming they consulted with the President. This consultation aligns with Article 168 of the 1992 Constitution and relevant sections of the National Media Commission Act, 1993 (Act 449). The new boards will oversee the strategic direction and operations of these vital public information bodies.

This reconstitution comes as Ghana's media landscape continues to evolve, facing challenges from digital transformation and economic pressures. State-owned media organisations play a crucial role in public discourse and information dissemination. Their effective governance is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring accurate reporting across the nation. Previous discussions have often highlighted the need for robust oversight to ensure financial prudence and editorial independence within these institutions.

Dr. Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow, a communications scholar and former Director-General of the GBC, now chairs the GNA Board. Other notable appointments include Prof. Samuel Kweku Hayford leading the GCGL Board and Mr. Francis Mills Robertson chairing the GBC Board. Dr. Charity Binka, a journalist and academic, takes the helm of the New Times Corporation Board. The NMC confirmed that the Managing Directors of each organisation also serve as board members.

The changes signal a renewed focus on leadership and strategic direction for Ghana's state media. Stakeholders will closely watch how these new boards navigate the financial sustainability and operational challenges facing these entities. Effective governance is critical for these organisations to fulfill their mandate of informing and educating the Ghanaian public, especially in an increasingly competitive media environment. The appointments aim to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to these important national institutions.
