Ghana's Ministry for the Interior has suspended the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited. This immediate action follows a shooting incident on June 21, 2026, which led to the hospitalisation of Adwoa Safo, former MP for Dome-Kwabenya.
The suspension stems from preliminary investigations indicating possible breaches of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571). These regulations govern the operations of private security organizations in Ghana. Specifically, the Ministry cited the alleged use of unprescribed uniforms and the unauthorized possession and use of firearms and ammunition by Kantanka Security Services personnel. These alleged violations occurred while the company provided private security services in Kwabenya, Accra.
This incident adds to ongoing concerns about the regulation and oversight of private security firms in Ghana's economic landscape. Private security operations are a significant sector, employing many people and contributing to the security services market. Ensuring their compliance with strict regulations is vital for public safety and maintaining investor confidence in the security environment. Data from the Ghana Police Service regularly highlights the importance of adherence to these rules to prevent misuse of authority and weapons.
The Ministry stated in a June 22 report that the “usage of unprescribed uniforms, unauthorised possession and use of firearms and ammunition as well as security accoutrements by private security personnel constitutes a serious breach.” This breach carries significant implications for public safety and security, according to the Ministry's directive. The decision underscores the government's commitment to enforce regulatory standards within the private security industry.
Kantanka Security Services must now immediately cease all operations pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter. The Ministry also advised all institutions to refrain from conducting business with the security company until investigations are complete. This administrative measure aims to safeguard public safety while a thorough investigation proceeds. The outcome of this investigation will determine any further actions taken against the company, potentially impacting its long-term viability and the broader private security market.
