The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in the Central Region has temporarily shut down four accommodation facilities. These closures occurred due to various breaches of tourism regulatory requirements.

The affected facilities include Elmina Beach Resort, Savoy Hotel, Veke Executive Lodge, and Wiz Homes, an Airbnb property. Some establishments operated without required licenses. Others faced sanctions for not paying the tourism levy or providing substandard services. These actions are part of an ongoing enforcement exercise by the GTA.

This enforcement drive aims to ensure compliance within the hospitality sector. It comes ahead of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations in September. The tourism sector is a significant contributor to Ghana's economy. Maintaining high standards and regulatory adherence is crucial for its growth and reputation. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service often highlights tourism's role in job creation and foreign exchange earnings. Unlicensed operations undermine these economic benefits and fair competition.

Mr. Charles Buabin, the Regional Director of Tourism, confirmed the closures to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He stated that facilities ignored multiple caution notices from the Authority. Ghanaian law requires all accommodation enterprises, including Airbnb properties, to register and obtain licenses before operating. Mr. Buabin emphasized that Airbnb is not a distinct facility type under Ghanaian law; all must comply.

The closed establishments must rectify identified defects and pay applicable regulatory fines before reopening. This process ensures they meet required standards. The GTA's actions send a clear message to other non-compliant operators. The public should verify the licensing status of hospitality facilities before patronage. This protects consumers and supports legitimate businesses. The enforcement exercise will continue across the region, especially during festive seasons. This ongoing effort seeks to sanitize the hospitality industry. It also aims to guarantee patrons receive standard services, boosting confidence in Ghana's tourism offerings. This proactive regulation helps safeguard Ghana's tourism revenue and international image.
