Ghana and Zimbabwe have significantly strengthened their cooperation on border security. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) recently engaged a 22-member delegation from the Zimbabwe Defence Force Joint Command and Staff Course 39. This engagement focused on developing strategies to enhance border security, regional cooperation, and overall national security.
The Zimbabwean delegation, currently on an official study tour in Ghana, visited the GIS National Headquarters in Accra. Senior officers from various GIS departments participated in strategic discussions. These departments included Intelligence, International Relations, Border Management, and Operations. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to robust security frameworks across the African continent.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to maintain stability and foster economic growth through secure national borders. Effective border management is vital for controlling illicit trade, preventing cross-border crime, and ensuring the safe movement of people and goods. Deputy Comptroller-General of Immigration (Command Post and Operations), Mr. Faisal Disu, emphasised the critical role of secure borders. He stated that secure borders are a key pillar of national sovereignty and essential for protecting citizens. Mr. Disu further highlighted that effective border management is crucial for enhancing national security while simultaneously supporting economic development and regional collaboration. Brigadier General Christopher Sibanda led the Zimbabwean delegation during these important discussions.
The strengthened cooperation is expected to lead to more coordinated efforts in intelligence sharing and joint operations between the two nations.
