Ghana Tourism Authority Launches Beach Clean-Up Initiative
Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) will launch a major “Clean the Beach Campaign” across selected beaches in Accra and surrounding coastal communities. This initiative, named 'The Blue Ghana Initiative: Protecting Our Beaches. Preserving Our Future,' aims to tackle the growing problem of waste pollution. It follows a severe flooding event in Accra on June 29, 2026, which highlighted inadequate waste management practices.

The campaign addresses widespread concerns about environmental degradation and its economic impact. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains contributes significantly to flooding, with much of this waste eventually ending up on Ghana’s coastline. Such pollution harms marine life, threatens fishing communities, and diminishes the country's appeal to tourists. Protecting these beaches is crucial for Ghana's environmental health and its tourism-dependent economy.

This initiative fits into Ghana’s broader efforts to manage environmental challenges. Flooding has become a recurring issue, often linked to poor waste disposal. The government and various agencies have repeatedly highlighted the need for improved sanitation across the nation. The GTA’s campaign is a strategic move to safeguard natural resources that underpin both local livelihoods and the national tourism sector. This sector contributed GHS 4.2 billion to the economy in 2023, emphasising its economic significance.

Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, emphasised the importance of collective action. She stated: “Our beaches are not just tourist attractions. They are the face we show the world and an inheritance we owe future generations.” Ms. Houadjeto also pointed out that plastic waste from drains in Accra eventually reaches the shores. She stressed that cleaning and maintaining beaches is a shared national duty for everyone. Environmental experts consistently advocate for such integrated approaches to waste management.

The ‘Blue Ghana Initiative’ will also establish a dedicated platform, The Blue Ghana Foundation. This foundation will secure funding and resources from individuals, corporate organisations, and development partners. These funds will support ongoing beach cleaning, environmental education, and conservation efforts along Ghana’s coastline. This long-term financial mechanism aims to ensure the campaign’s sustainability and broader impact. The campaign complements existing efforts by local authorities and disaster management agencies in the wake of recent floods.

The Authority also calls on manufacturers of bottled water, beverages, and other plastic-packaged products to participate actively. It urges these producers to champion responsible plastic waste management, invest in recycling initiatives, and support public education. The Government of Ghana's efforts to phase out harmful single-use plastics, such as take-away containers, are also commended and supported. Reducing plastic waste is essential for safeguarding Ghana's coastline and fostering healthier communities.

The GTA will collaborate with community groups, hospitality businesses, schools, and volunteers to ensure the initiative’s success. Details regarding specific participating beaches and campaign dates will be released in the coming weeks. The success of this campaign is crucial for sustaining Ghana's tourism sector and protecting its valuable natural heritage.
