He emphasized that plastics are not inherently dangerous, but their indiscriminate disposal into drains causes blockages and flooding. Mr. Deku advocates for stronger enforcement of sanitation by-laws, public education, and policies promoting recycling.
The Production Planner of Universal Plastic Products and Recycling (UPPR) Ghana Limited, Mr. Gabriel Kudiabor, argued that Ghana's problem is waste management and public behavior. He believes sustained public education on waste segregation and greater investment in recycling infrastructure will significantly reduce plastic pollution. Mr. Kudiabor also proposed a deposit-return system for beverage bottles, offering financial incentives for returns.
Such a system would boost collection rates and provide valuable raw materials for recycling plants. UPPR Ghana Limited exemplifies this approach by transforming discarded PET (Polyethene Terephthalate) bottles into high-quality PET flakes. These flakes serve as industrial raw materials for manufacturing products like polyester fiber, yarn, and textiles.
This initiative not only reduces plastic pollution but also creates jobs and supports Ghana's circular economy. The Jospong Group has expanded its recycling efforts to include other hard plastics such as Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE). These materials are commonly found in household containers and detergent bottles, further broadening the scope of plastic recovery.

Decision-makers must prioritize investment in modern recycling facilities and implement effective waste segregation programs.
