The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Welfare Fund has surpassed GHS 10 million. This significant financial milestone enables the launch of new welfare initiatives for its members.
These new initiatives include a medical insurance scheme, low-interest mortgage and vehicle financing arrangements. The GBA also plans to introduce a multipurpose membership card and construct Bar Centres across the country. These benefits aim to provide greater support to lawyers, especially younger professionals.
This development reflects a broader trend of professional associations in Ghana strengthening member support systems. Such initiatives help retain talent and improve the working conditions for professionals. The GBA's growing fund and expanded benefits align with efforts to professionalise and modernise various sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The Association's membership has grown substantially, from 11 members in 1957 to over 12,000 today.
GBA President Mrs. Efua Ghartey announced these plans at the 2026/2027 Annual Conference in Ada. She highlighted the new medical insurance offering both outpatient and inpatient coverage for members. Mrs. Ghartey also noted plans to increase and expedite death benefits under the welfare scheme.
The GBA's move to secure low-interest financing for mortgages and vehicles addresses critical needs for many professionals. The multipurpose Near Field Communication (NFC) card will offer identification, business networking, and discounts from various businesses. The planned Bar Centres, estimated at GHS 7 million each, will provide essential facilities like offices, conference rooms, and libraries. These centres will enhance professional development and collaboration among lawyers.
The GBA expects its membership to grow further following the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170). This growth underscores the need for robust welfare programmes. The Welfare Committee, led by Daniel Owusu Nyampong, and the Welfare Fund Committee, chaired by Yaw Boafo and Amelia Croffie, oversee these efforts. The Association's proactive approach to member welfare sets a precedent for other professional bodies in Ghana. This focus on support can attract and retain skilled legal professionals, contributing to the nation's legal framework.
