Ghana's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has strongly advised Ghanaians to cease using Styrofoam products. The EPA warns that these products are not biodegradable and pose significant environmental and health risks. This directive comes ahead of a nationwide ban on polystyrene foam products, which will become effective on January 1, 2027.
Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, delivered this message at the launch of an awareness campaign in Accra. She highlighted that Styrofoam remains in the environment for extended periods because it does not decompose naturally. This persistence contributes to long-term pollution and ecological damage across the country.
The move to ban Styrofoam aligns with Ghana's broader efforts to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices. Professor Klutse explained that when hot food is served in Styrofoam containers, the material can leak microplastics into the food. Beyond food consumption, the EPA also highlighted dangers associated with burning Styrofoam. When ignited, Styrofoam releases harmful substances into the air. Professor Klutse further warned about the fire risks posed by Styrofoam used in building materials and household items. She noted that Styrofoam in ceilings and mattresses is highly flammable. The EPA will begin enforcing the ban rigorously from January 1, 2027. Businesses are encouraged to clear their existing stock of Styrofoam products before this date.
