Election Watch Ghana will host a national policy dialogue on Tuesday, August 25, to assess the implementation of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999). This event aims to evaluate the law's effectiveness and its implications for national security and democratic governance in Ghana.

The dialogue will bring together key stakeholders at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra. Participants include security officials, political actors, religious leaders, and civil society representatives. Their goal is to identify gaps in the Act's enforcement and develop strategies for peaceful elections.

The Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019, was passed to curb political vigilantism, a significant threat to Ghana's electoral integrity and stability. Previous elections have seen incidents of violence linked to political groups, undermining public trust. This dialogue reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure peaceful transitions of power.

The National Security Coordinator, COP Abdul-Osman Razak, will serve as the Guest Speaker for the event. Dr. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, will chair the proceedings. His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, will be the Special Guest of Honour, underscoring the event's importance.

The dialogue will feature two sessions with prominent figures discussing the Act's impact and future. Speakers include former Minister for Information Kofi Totobi Quakye and former Member of Parliament Dr. Benjamin Kumbour. These discussions will help shape policy recommendations for government and political parties.

The organisers stated the dialogue aims to identify bottlenecks in Act 999's implementation. It also seeks to agree on concrete actions for various stakeholders. These actions are crucial for safeguarding Ghana’s peace and democracy ahead of future elections.

Effective implementation of Act 999 is vital for preventing electoral violence and ensuring fair polls. The outcomes of this dialogue could influence how security agencies and political parties approach the upcoming election cycle. Stakeholders will watch closely for actionable recommendations.
