    Court issues bench warrant for Kweku Osei Korankye Asiedu

    An Accra Circuit Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kweku Osei Korankye Asiedu, a marketer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator. Mr. Asiedu, also known as KOKA, failed to appear in court to answer charges of threat of death and publication of false news. The court adjourned the case to August 25, 2026, following his absence. Mr. Asiedu is accused of threatening staff of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He allegedly made these threats in a video circulating on social media. The prosecution stated that Mr. Asiedu's conduct was disrespectful to the court, as he had been duly notified to appear. This incident occurs amid heightened scrutiny of public officials and state institutions in Ghana. The Economic and Organised Crime Office plays a crucial role in combating financial crimes and corruption. Threats against its staff can undermine public trust and the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts. Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, prosecuting, informed the court about Mr. Asiedu's failure to appear. The prosecution detailed that Mr. Asiedu was invited for questioning on July 14, 2026, regarding a video where he allegedly threatened EOCO staff. In a video recorded on May 29, 2026, he purportedly stated, “We know the officers’ houses, we know where they stay, and we will kill you.” The prosecution further alleged that on July 13, 2026, Mr. Asiedu appeared in another video. In this video, he claimed there was “an order from above, the Presidency, that no one should bring food to Dennis Miracles Aboagye.” Mr. Aboagye was then in EOCO custody assisting with investigations. The prosecution described this statement as false and intended to incite a breach of the peace. It also aimed to mislead the public and undermine EOCO officials in their lawful duties. Following the publication of the video, the driver of the Executive Director of EOCO was reportedly pursued by about 20 unidentified men on motorbikes. These men were suspected of intending to attack him. The prosecution stated that Mr. Asiedu’s actions instilled fear among EOCO personnel as they carried out their lawful duties. Mr. Asiedu was subsequently arrested and, during police investigations, allegedly admitted the offences in his caution statement. The issuance of a bench warrant signals the court's resolve to ensure compliance with legal proceedings. This case will be closely watched by the public and political observers. It could set a precedent for how threats against state officials are handled. The outcome may also influence public discourse on the responsibilities of political communicators.
