Climate Education Needs Practical Focus

    Ghana's climate change education must shift from theoretical classroom learning to practical, hands-on activities, according to Patrick AbbeyQuaye, Operations and Programs Officer of GAYO Eco-clubs Africa. This urgent call addresses a concerning gap in climate awareness among young people, including university students.

    Mr. AbbeyQuaye, speaking at a WaterAid and JoyNews National Dialogue, highlighted that many young Ghanaians lack a fundamental understanding of climate change. He cited an awareness exercise at the University of Ghana where only two out of ten students demonstrated knowledge of the subject. This low awareness is particularly troubling given the increasing environmental challenges facing the nation.

    This situation reflects a broader challenge within Ghana's educational system regarding environmental literacy. While the Ghana Education Service is integrating climate science, the emphasis remains largely theoretical. Ghana, like many developing nations, is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as erratic rainfall, droughts, and coastal erosion, which directly affect its agricultural sector and overall economic stability. Enhancing practical understanding is crucial for building resilience.

    “I'm more interested in the practicality of it. Hard education, you don't do much of the talking. You go to the field,” Mr. AbbeyQuaye stated. He stressed that his own understanding of climate change deepened through practical experience, initially in a high school club and later through university studies in Marine and Fisheries Science.

    The implications of this educational gap are significant for Ghana's future economic development and environmental sustainability. A populace with limited understanding of climate change will struggle to adapt to its effects or contribute to mitigation efforts. Decision-makers and educational institutions must respond by prioritizing practical environmental education to equip the next generation with essential problem-solving skills.

    Mr. AbbeyQuaye urged schools to involve children in simple environmental projects. These could include building basic water filtration systems, implementing waste segregation, and undertaking small-scale energy projects. Such activities can cultivate problem-solving skills and environmental awareness from an early age, fostering a generation capable of addressing climate-related issues.

    He acknowledged existing efforts but insisted that more substantial action is necessary to translate climate education into tangible outcomes. “I think that it's still not enough. A lot of effort still needs to be put into it,” he added. He advocated for more climate-related competitions and practical programs in schools to complement current sanitation and environmental initiatives.

    The economic impact of climate change in Ghana is substantial, affecting sectors from agriculture to infrastructure. Equipping young people with practical knowledge and skills to address these challenges is not merely an environmental concern; it is an economic imperative. A more informed and engaged youth can drive innovation and sustainable practices, contributing to Ghana's long-term economic resilience.
