Aspirant for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has asserted that ongoing or past court cases should not disqualify individuals from contesting political office. He stated his position on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen program on June 8.
Chairman Wontumi believes legal challenges are a normal part of public life. They do not diminish one’s eligibility or credibility for political leadership. He emphasized his respect for the judicial system, saying, “I am a law-abiding person, so whenever the court needs me, I present myself.”
This stance positions Chairman Wontumi against stricter interpretations of eligibility for political office. Ghana's political landscape has seen several prominent figures face legal scrutiny while continuing their careers. He cited examples like Sammy Gyamfi, Ato Forson, and Fiifi Kwetey. Chairman Wontumi also referenced historical figures, including Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, who faced imprisonment. He believes this demonstrates that public will can overcome legal challenges.
The NPP National Chairman hopeful expressed his confidence in his own political journey. "What I know is that Chairman Wontumi, God is with me," he declared. He pointed to international examples, such as former US President Donald Trump, who has navigated numerous legal battles while retaining significant public backing. "What challenge has Donald Trump not faced? But when his people insisted they wanted him, they did," he remarked.
His argument suggests that the ultimate test for political leaders should be the mandate given by the populace, rather than their involvement in legal proceedings. This perspective could influence discussions around candidate vetting within political parties and potentially impact election regulations. The broader implication is a debate on transparency versus the right to political participation for all citizens, regardless of their legal entanglements.
