The incident occurred on a Saturday night around 22:25 local time (02:25 GMT). Police received a 911 call reporting an overturned boat near Liberty Island. A large search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving multiple agencies.
Twelve people were initially rescued from the water and are reported to be in stable condition. However, New York police divers later recovered a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where they later died.
Officials have not publicly released the names of the victims. However, co-workers of the deceased woman identified her as Sara Sanchez and her baby as Antonella Garcia. They were the wife and child of Andres Garcia, an employee at Il Punto Ristorante, who was also on the boat when it capsized. The restaurant expressed profound grief, stating, "What was meant to be a joyful family outing ended in unimaginable tragedy."
The rescue effort was extensive, involving two US Coast Guard (USCG) boats, four fire department boats, two police boats, and a police helicopter. A nearby tour operator, Sea the City, also assisted in pulling 11 people from the water. Adam Schwartz, the company's founder, confirmed their involvement in the immediate rescue.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Coast Guard investigators are specifically determining whether the boat was illegally chartered. An illegal charter refers to any passenger-for-hire vessel operation that lacks the necessary credentials, safety equipment, and a certificate of inspection. This aspect of the investigation underscores the importance of stringent maritime safety regulations.
Captain Doreen McCarthy of the USCG expressed gratitude for the rapid response. She stated, "We are extremely grateful for the heroic, swift actions of our partner agencies and Good Samaritan vessel who assisted in rescuing survivors from the water."
