Abraham Nortey, former Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), has declared his intention to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Domeabra-Obom Constituency. This declaration, made on July 29, 2026, positions him as an aspirant for the 2028 general elections. Mr. Nortey aims to secure the party’s nomination, transitioning from student leadership to national electoral politics.
Mr. Nortey announced his bid through a Facebook post, signaling his formal entry into the political race. His decision follows a notable career in student governance and community advocacy. He previously served as SRC President at UHAS in 2019. In November 2024, he was elected and sworn in as the 62nd SRC President of UCC for the 2024/2025 academic year. This made him the first medical student to lead UCC’s SRC and one of the few student leaders in Ghana to have held such a position at two public universities.
This move reflects a growing trend of young, educated individuals seeking to enter Ghana’s political landscape. The NDC, like other major parties, often sees a diverse pool of aspirants for parliamentary seats. The Domeabra-Obom constituency is a key area, and the selection of a candidate will be crucial for the party’s strategy in the upcoming 2028 elections. The party aims to present strong candidates across all constituencies to challenge the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Beyond his student leadership roles, Mr. Nortey founded the Visionary Norman Foundation. This non-profit organization focuses on community development, particularly in education, healthcare, and social initiatives. In 2026, the foundation provided scholarships and tuition support to 20 tertiary students across various public universities. These included the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This background in community service could resonate with voters in Domeabra-Obom.
Mr. Nortey also actively participated in political mobilization for the NDC during the 2024 general election campaign. He engaged with diverse groups, including market women, transport operators, young people, and party supporters. His academic background is extensive, holding a Bachelor of Science in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UHAS. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at UCC and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at King’s University College. Additionally, he holds a Master of Public Health from GIMPA, a Master of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Education, Winneba, and a Master of Education in Teaching in Higher Education from UCC. He is also pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health.
His declaration means he joins other aspirants vying for the NDC’s parliamentary ticket in Domeabra-Obom. The party’s primaries will be a critical step in determining its representation for the 2028 general elections. Observers will watch how his extensive academic and leadership background translates into political support. The outcome of the primaries will significantly influence the NDC’s electoral prospects in the constituency.
