Nineteen individuals suspected of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in Mpohor Fiase, Western Region, will face prosecution. The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) arrested these suspects. The Lands Commission has assured that legal processes will proceed against them.
These arrests occurred on Wednesday, July 29, following sustained complaints from residents, affected farmers, and traditional leaders. These groups raised significant concerns about increasing illegal mining activities near the Mpohor Fiase Police Station. The NAIMOS Task Force conducted reconnaissance, targeting two major illegal mining sites and several smaller operations.
This crackdown aligns with Ghana's broader struggle against illegal mining, which significantly damages the environment and economy. Galamsey operations pollute water bodies, degrade land, and often involve illicit financial flows. The government has intensified efforts to combat this menace, recognizing its severe impact on agriculture and public health.
Paa Kwasi Shandorf, Communications Officer of the Lands Commission, stated on JoyNews Desk on Thursday, July 30, that the suspects would face the full rigours of the law. This will happen after investigations into their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities are completed. He emphasized that prosecuting these individuals is part of a wider state effort to deter illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
During the operation, authorities destroyed 16 chanfang machines, nine water pumps, and three makeshift structures used for illegal mining. An excavator found at one site was disabled by removing critical components. The task force also seized a pump-action shotgun with four rounds of ammunition from one suspect. Another suspect was found with GHS 120,000 in cash, highlighting the financial scale of these illicit operations.
The 19 suspects and all seized items have been handed over for further investigations. This will initiate the necessary legal processes. NAIMOS has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing intelligence-led operations. These operations aim to disrupt galamsey activities and dismantle networks facilitating environmental degradation across the country.
