The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama, has marked the first death anniversary of his predecessor, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. This commemoration occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The event included the distribution of food items to widows, orphans, and other vulnerable residents within the constituency. Islamic prayers were also offered for the late legislator.
Professor Alidu Seidu stated that the event aimed to honour Dr. Murtala Mohammed's contributions to the constituency. It also sought to keep alive the values he championed during his tenure as MP. He announced plans to make the commemoration an annual event. Additionally, a scholarship scheme and an annual memorial lecture will be established in the late legislator's honour.

The commemoration follows a national inter-faith memorial service held earlier to mark the first anniversary of a tragic event. This service remembered the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash. The crash claimed the lives of eight people. Among the victims were Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and then Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah. Other victims included Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye. Three Ghana Armed Forces personnel, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also perished. The Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. It was travelling from Accra to the region on official duty. The institutionalisation of this annual event by Professor Seidu Mahama signals a long-term commitment to honouring Dr. Mohammed's memory.
