Ghana's Western Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects linked to the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer in Agona Nkwanta. The victim, Seth Kobina, was shot and killed during an attack on his gold buying shop on Thursday, August 20.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. when armed men attacked Mr. Kobina's shop. He was rushed to Agona Nkwanta Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. This violent crime underscores the significant security challenges faced by individuals involved in Ghana's lucrative gold trade, particularly in regional areas.
Ghana's gold sector is a major contributor to the national economy, generating substantial export revenue. However, the informal nature of much of the trade, involving individual buyers and small-scale miners, often exposes participants to high risks. Such incidents can deter investment and participation in the sector, impacting local economies and the broader national financial landscape.
Police investigations, including a review of CCTV footage, led to the identification of Emmanuel Amponsah, 29, as an alleged gang leader. Amponsah was arrested on Friday, August 21, at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta. A locally manufactured pistol and two live BB cartridges were recovered from him.
However, Amponsah reportedly fell ill after his arrest and died upon arrival at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital. The police have not yet provided details on the circumstances surrounding his death. This development raises questions about police procedures and the welfare of suspects in custody, which are critical for public trust and accountability.
Further police inquiries resulted in the arrest of three more suspects: Christopher Seyiri, 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; and Thomas Odoom, 30. A fifth suspect, Isaac Quayeson, was apprehended in Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region. A search of Quayeson's residence yielded another locally manufactured pistol, three live BB cartridges, a metal bar, and two cutlasses.
During questioning, Quayeson identified Amponsah as the alleged shooter of Seth Kobina. He also implicated Thomas Odoom as one of the individuals seen in the CCTV footage during the robbery. The four surviving suspects are currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations.
The Western Regional Police Command stated that efforts are continuing to arrest any other persons involved in the robbery and murder. This case highlights the persistent threat of armed robbery to businesses handling valuable commodities, influencing operational costs and security measures for gold dealers across the country. The outcome of these investigations will be closely watched by the business community and the public.
