Sulley Sambian, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) North East Regional Secretary, has pledged to strengthen the party’s structures and reclaim lost ground in the region. He made this commitment while announcing his bid for the Regional Chairman position. Mr. Sambian aims to improve the NPP's electoral performance ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Sambian, a private legal practitioner, is contesting the chairmanship against the incumbent. Delegates will decide the outcome at the party’s regional conference this weekend. He stated that his years of grassroots party service and professional background have prepared him to lead the NPP in this politically significant region. The North East Region is the home region of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This internal party contest holds broader implications for the NPP's national electoral strategy. The North East Region is crucial for the party, especially with Dr. Bawumia as its flagbearer. Strong regional performance could bolster the NPP's overall chances in the 2028 elections. The party's ability to consolidate support in key regions will be vital for maintaining its political dominance.

Speaking to journalists about his bid, Mr. Sambian asserted, “I am tried, tested, and ready to lead the NPP in the region as Chairman.” He added, “I am offering my expertise following years of service to ensure that the region becomes a no-go area for our opponents.” He believes his strategy and mental ability will deliver success for the party.

Mr. Sambian emphasized that the NPP cannot leave its 2028 electoral fortunes to chance. He called for stronger organisation, discipline, and strategy to improve the party’s performance. His campaign prioritises strengthening the party’s internal machinery rather than focusing on personality. He aims to position the party to win more parliamentary seats in the region.

The 2028 elections will demand more than slogans and campaign rhetoric, according to Mr. Sambian. He believes success will depend on combining “brawn and brainpower to reclaim and increase the parliamentary seats in the area.” This approach highlights a focus on tangible results and strategic planning over traditional campaign methods.

Mr. Sambian’s challenge comes after a closely contested regional chairmanship race in 2022. At the Nalerigu Regional Conference on May 27, 2022, incumbent Chairman Nurudeen retained his position. He secured 71 of 146 valid votes, while his closest challenger, Akamara Bawah Henry, polled 50 votes. Mr. Nurudeen is expected to seek another term, setting the stage for a significant contest this weekend.

As the current Regional Secretary, Mr. Sambian leverages his knowledge of the party’s internal operations to demonstrate his readiness for the chairmanship. He maintains that robust grassroots organisation and strategic planning are central to improving the NPP’s electoral fortunes. The outcome of this regional conference will indicate whether delegates prefer continuity or a change in leadership for the North East Region.
