The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has not yet constructed a permanent regional head office. This situation persists despite previous efforts to raise funds for the project. Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a hopeful for the NPP regional chairmanship, has voiced his disappointment regarding this ongoing issue. He stated that a committee previously formed to secure resources for the office failed to deliver on its mandate.
Dr. Kokofu, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Authority, confirmed his personal contribution to the uncompleted project. He noted that funds raised earlier for the office complex were not used for their intended purpose. The absence of a permanent office in the NPP's traditional stronghold is seen as a significant failing by regional leadership. This situation has caused concern among party members and political observers alike.
The lack of a dedicated regional office potentially weakens the NPP's presence in an area crucial for its national electoral success. The Ashanti Region consistently provides the party's largest voter base in national elections. This issue arises as the party prepares for regional elections on August 15. Dr. Kokofu specifically criticised his closest contender in the upcoming regional elections, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah. He stated that Mr. Appiah chaired the committee responsible for supervising the office project. Dr. Kokofu highlighted that Mr. Appiah, despite his past role, failed to ensure the office's construction. This direct accusation underscores the political stakes involved in the regional leadership contest.
Looking forward, Dr. Kokofu announced plans to secure a suitable regional headquarters. He revealed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's office is spearheading this new initiative. Hon. Collins Ntim, former MP for Offinso North, leads the efforts from Dr. Bawumia's office. Architectural drawings for the proposed Ashanti Regional office complex are now finalised. All necessary arrangements are reportedly in place to move the project forward.
Furthermore, Dr. Kokofu disclosed that between 35 and 40 Ghanaians of Ashanti descent have pledged financial support. These individuals, both local and in the diaspora, have indicated their willingness to contribute. If elected Regional Chairman, Dr. Kokofu plans to unite party members through a 'historic homecoming conference'. This conference would then serve as a platform to push for the construction of the regional office. He has also engaged the MP for Bantama regarding a temporary relocation of the regional office to the constituency.
The ongoing delay in building a permanent office complex for the NPP in the Ashanti Region could affect party morale. It might also impact coordination at the grassroots level.
