Ghana’s Interior Minister has imposed a curfew on 12 communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality, Oti Region. This restriction on movement takes effect from Friday, June 19, 2026. The curfew runs daily from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am.
This Executive Instrument imposition follows advice from the National Security Council. The affected communities include Keri, Abrewanko, Abrewanko Junction, Nyambo, Nyambo Junction, Shari, Kromase, Power, Nyakoma, Odomi, Bonakye, and Nkwanta. The government seeks to restore and maintain peace in these areas due to unspecified security concerns.
The Oti Region, where Nkwanta South is located, has experienced intermittent security challenges in recent years. These issues sometimes disrupt local trade, agriculture, and daily economic routines. Such curfews, while necessary for security, can impact income generation for small businesses and farmers. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows that regional stability is crucial for economic development and poverty reduction efforts.
The Interior Minister urged local leaders and residents to support peace efforts. They also encouraged stakeholders to use non-violent means for addressing concerns. This approach emphasizes dialogue over conflict to achieve lasting stability.
The curfew will likely impact daily commerce and movement within the affected communities. Local markets may see reduced operating hours and diminished patronage. Residents must adjust their routines, potentially affecting productivity and access to essential services. Observers will monitor how quickly peace is restored and economic activity returns to normal levels.
Previous security measures in other parts of Ghana have shown varied impacts on local economies. Sometimes, prolonged restrictions lead to economic hardship for residents. The government’s ability to swiftly de-escalate tensions will be key. This will minimise long-term economic disruption and ensure community welfare. The focus remains on channeling concerns through peaceful avenues for sustainable development.
