Former President John Dramani Mahama stated that no African country can successfully manage current global challenges in isolation. He urged for stronger African unity and deeper regional economic integration. Mahama delivered these remarks at Chatham House in London on June 1, 2026. He highlighted that African nations must build internal economic resilience.

This call comes amid growing supply chain disruptions and shifting global trade patterns. Mahama noted that rising economic nationalism and global uncertainty pose significant risks. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), based in Accra, was identified as a major opportunity for Africa's economic advancement. Successful implementation of AfCFTA can boost intra-African trade significantly.

Mahama pointed out Africa's long reliance on exporting raw commodities. The continent often imports finished goods at higher prices. He described this as unsustainable and strategically weak. Ghana remains committed to industrial transformation, adding value to products, and diversifying exports. Regional economic integration is key to building a more robust economy.

Mahama stated, "In today's global environment, no African country, regardless of size or resources, can effectively navigate geopolitical and economic complexities in isolation." He added, "African unity is therefore no longer simply a political aspiration; it is a strategic imperative." This emphasizes the urgent need for collaborative action among African nations.

The former president also stressed the importance of balanced international partnerships. Ghana will continue cooperation with emerging economies and new global powers. Its foreign policy prioritizes strategic pragmatism over ideological rigidity. This approach is rooted in Ghana's national interest and seeks to expand markets. It also aims to facilitate technology transfer and create jobs.

Mahama believes countries that build bridges across geopolitical divides will gain relevance. Ghana will pursue partnerships that support industrialization and economic transformation. These partnerships are expected to create employment opportunities for the youth. The goal is to strengthen the continent's overall economic standing.
