Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim declared that the 24-hour market initiative will become the most successful government socio-economic intervention programme. The ministry is executing this plan across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). Construction follows a highly coordinated and standardised framework to ensure uniformity nationwide.
Mr. Ibrahim, who is also the Member of Parliament for Banda, made these remarks at Bongase in the Bono Region. He cut the sod for the construction of a 24-hour market there. Ten consultants are supervising the market construction in all 16 regions. These consultants ensure design, procurement, and construction are professional and meet specifications. This centralisation prevents varied local approaches and ensures consistent structures.
The 24-hour market projects are designed around four models. These models vary based on available land and local population size. The largest model requires four acres of land. The second largest uses three acres. Smaller models occupy 2.5 acres and two acres respectively. The population of an assembly dictates the appropriate market size.
Construction has already started on some of these market projects. Foundation work is progressing steadily. The Banda District, for instance, needs better market infrastructure. Bongase fishing market is economically important. Traders and buyers from Greater Accra and the Northern Region visit it. However, current facilities are insufficient.
Mr. Ibrahim personally facilitated the construction of six pavilions for traders. Yet, more infrastructure is needed to unlock the market’s full potential. Building the 24-hour market at Bongase will boost commercial activities. It will improve trading conditions. It will also contribute to the district's economic development. The minister assured completion within one year.
This initiative aligns with the government’s goal to stimulate economic growth. Standardised infrastructure is key to ensuring development benefits reach all regions equitably. Previous infrastructure projects have sometimes suffered from inconsistent quality. The minister’s focus on a centralised, standardized approach aims to overcome these challenges.
The success of this initiative could significantly impact local economies. It provides modern trading spaces. This can attract more businesses and buyers. It can also create significant employment opportunities during and after construction. The projected completion timeline of one year for the Bongase market suggests an ambitious rollout strategy.
The Ministry of Local Government monitors progress. They ensure the project stays on track. The use of consultants provides technical oversight. This helps maintain quality and adherence to plans. The government expects this programme to drive economic activity. It should also improve the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.
