An Israeli settler in the West Bank has openly justified attacks on Palestinians as revenge. Yehuda Shimon, a resident of the Havat Gilad outpost, told the BBC that violence against Palestinian villages was a necessary response to the killing of an Israeli security guard. This statement highlights the escalating tensions and extreme ideologies fueling the conflict in the occupied territories.
Shimon, a lawyer representing Israelis accused of violence against Palestinians, specifically named Palestinian villages like Tal and Sarra. He suggested that after one Israeli death, all residents in these villages should be killed. When challenged on the racist implications of his statement, he affirmed that one Jewish life is worth millions of Palestinian lives, attributing this belief to divine choice.
This perspective is crucial for understanding the ongoing conflict in the West Bank, where Israeli settlements and outposts continue to expand. These expansions often occur without Israeli planning permission or legal oversight, and are considered illegal under international law. The Havat Gilad outpost itself was established over 20 years ago in memory of an Israeli security officer killed by Palestinians.
The United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) tracks casualties in the region. OCHA reported that 64 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank from the beginning of this year until July 20. Of these, 18 deaths occurred during settler attacks, with at least 12 directly attributed to settlers. In contrast, one Israeli was killed during the same period. The number of injuries inflicted by settlers has also sharply increased, averaging more than three per day this year.
Shimon dismissed international law as irrelevant, asserting that the Bible grants Jews the right to West Bank land. He criticized the Israeli government and army for not adequately supporting Jewish land claims. This criticism comes despite a significant expansion of settlements and outposts under the current Israeli government, which includes far-right religious-nationalist ministers. He also accused the Israeli army of not using lethal force often enough against Palestinians during confrontations with settlers.
The settler further alleged that every Palestinian in the area possesses two guns and is preparing for attacks similar to those of October 7, 2023. He advocated for the removal of all Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza. These views are rejected by many Israelis but reflect a dangerous segment of settler ideology.
The conflict between Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents in the West Bank is profoundly unequal. Israel occupied the territory during the 1967 Middle East war. Since then, it has built hundreds of settlements and outposts, housing hundreds of thousands of Israelis. The expansion of these settlements continues to be a major point of contention and a barrier to peace.
